I am writing this because my banking account was just whittled to death by Eagle Van Lines, a company that has a nice facade, but they are oh so ugly on the inside. I initially paid a great deal of my balance with them: Somewhere in the vicinity of 70%. If had not given them all the remaining balance in cash on delivery (including allowable cc payments with 5% surcharge), my balance would have doubled in fees for returning the items to a facility. I never even told them explicitly that I was ready for a delivery, I was waiting for a call from the supervisor so we could talk about some options for long term storage and moving it into a different city when I was ready. Instead, they called and said the truck was on it's way and it wasn't going to turn around for me. I asked for 2 days notice. The trucker gave me 2 hours notice. When they arrived, they wouldn't unload until I paid. Which left me in a very uncomfortable position, since I didn't know what the condition of my items were in. Furthermore, they don't accept insurance under any cost. Only 60 cents per pound, which might cover the cost of something like a paperweight, but certainly not anything valuable. Not even close. Absurdity. I asked the movers why they don't insure. They said the company had gotten burnt too many times. Burnt? Burnt because the customer had damaged items and the company had to pay? So, now the company is simply damaging people's items and not having to pay. So the customer gets screwed? Interesting. Regardless, I had no damaged items. But to finalize my nightmare, before they began unloading, they asked me if i was charged for elevator usage and long haul distance. I said, "no." They charged/held my equipment hostage me an additional 150 for walking 100 feet to an elevator that i paid management for exclusive usage for 3 hours. I should have said, "ok, use the stairs." After all was said and done, my balance went from an initial 1100 to paying nearly 2000 for 2 large and 5 medium boxes, 2 monitors, a computer, 3 area rugs, and a wooden chest. I could have bought these items over again for the moving cost i was made responsible for.
This is completely unacceptable business and I consider one step shy of robbery.
