Rob in sales provided a "worst-case scenario" move estimate of $1,078 based on 9 hours. Since this was a move within Massachusetts of a small apartment, he told me he was expecting the job to take no more than 6 hours, however, just to be on the safe side, the worst case scenario was 9 hours which he added "will never happen" because this is a move within Massachusetts and we have a small apartment and very light stuff. He insisted that they hire their own workers (including his son who works for the compan) not the temporary workers others hire. He also stated that they are not brokers, but a local company so we had nothing to worry about. Once I received his quote of $1,078 in email, I called him back again with questions on the "travel time" with charge of $98. I told him I was concerned abou the hourly rate, he told me that was a FIXED price and will not be charged more than 2 hours so that will remain at $98 total. Also, I questioned the 9 hours of labor time, which he again reiterated was the "worst-case scenario" so the total move will not take more than 9 hours. I again questioned what if they get stuck in traffic or are slow workers and it takes them longer than 9 hours, he reiterated again that the workers want to do two jobs in one day and it is in their interest to get the move done and leave ASAP so they will not be slow and take their time for the move. He again reiterated that he expects the move to take 6 hours (and asked me to get a cashiers check for that) plus some additional cash for the worst case scenario if the move were to take 9 hours. On the day of the move, the movers were supposed to arrive between8-9AM. They did not arrive until 10:15 AM. Once they did arrive, one of the workers started moving all the boxes, the second one asked to use our bathroom and disappeared inside for 20 mins, the third would bring one box down and disapper in the truck for 20 mins each time. So only one worker was working as he should. We had most of our stuff packed, including half our kitchen (in the estimate, I had asked them to pack the entire kitchen so the 9 hours included packing the entire kitchen, however, we had packed half our kitchen so the estimate should have decreased, not increased). I noticed, the guy was wrapping 3-4 spoons together (which is why it was taking so long), so I told him to take the entire plastic container that held the spoons and wrap in one box. These were not breakable items, but the movers were extremely slow and were increasing the time on purpose. I asked around 12 pm, how much longer, and the guy stated should be one more hour. We provided the original boxes for our very expensive lamps, the mover said they will do their own packing. Then the 2nd mover stated an hour later that we need to give them original boxes when we told them the other guy said they will not pack in that and already brought to the truck, he proceeded in taking apart our lamps and wrapping them in bubble wrap. We reiterated that these were expensive lamps and we don't want to lose them. At 2pm, they were still taking their slow time packing, when I said again how much longer as we had to drive as well, they said another 45 min to an hour, I stated there was nothing left to pack (the last item they were moving at that time was the sofa), they finally hurried up and got the sofa down to the truck in 15 mins. Once they got down to the truck however, one guy was just standing around and the other two were doing all the work. I went down after I caught him slacking around and as soon as he saw me coming he started picking up stuff to move. They also left their papers etc in the old apartment and I had to carry it out for them to the truck. They stood around the truck for 30 mins (telling me they were loading the truck) when any blind person can see that it does not take 30 mins to put a small sofa inside the truck with 3 men who are supposed to be doing the job. One guy looked like he was ready to pass out and dragging his feet. We had felt bad for them and had been nice to them all day (as they stated even at the end when we ordered them pizza, after which they proceeded to tell us, our final cost is going to be $500 more!!!). At our destination, they were even slower (arrived 30 mins later than we did and I had to call them to find out where they were). They proceeded to put the boxes inside however were dragging so much that we felt really bad for them as human beings and asked if they want something to drink/eat. We also ordered pizza for them. They must have felt bad then for cheating us all day and robbing us blind so the guy tells me that once they bring all our stuff in (which wasn't much left-they held our TV and sofas hostage in truck), we 're looking at additional 3 hours, plus 2 hours more of their travel time back to office for a total of $1,516 for 11.5 hours. The huge increase was due to the fact that we are now also paying for OVERTIME for the 3 workers which was NEVER relayed to us int he estimate even though I kept insisting to Rob that I want the worst case scenario for the move. The movers stated that Rob has a tendency to do that to customers, he gives them really low estimates and then the customers get robbed blind and the movers hear it from them. He told me to call the company, which I did but becasue it was after 5pm, I also left numerous messages and no one called back. the movers than stated that they will have to take our stuff back if we don't pay the full amount and we would have to pay for the delivery charges once the dispute was resolved. He also stated that if we want them to reassemble our bed and tV stand/TV, it will cost additional hourly rates. We feel totally ripped off. They left us no choice, no one would pick up the phone and they wouldn't release our stuff until we paid them. We didn't have enough money b/c according to Rob, the worst case scenario was $1,078. The final was $500 extra. Anyway, my husband ran to the ATM and emptied out our account so we could pay the ransom for the TV and sofa!!! This company has completely unethical practices and should be taken out of business. Their sales people do false advertising and their workers are slow and lazy and do the job as slowly as possible to get overtime which their sales guys never tells you about. Then they hold your stuff hostage, until you pay them. I don't know how these people sleep at night robbing people blind. We now have no money left to pay for FOOD for the rest of the month. These people should NEVER EVER be hired by anyone else. We feel totally taken advantage of by them. They robbed us blind!!! My husband also caught one of the workers lying down in the truck so they were taking naps while they should have been working and charging us OVERTIME, which their sales team never mentioned to us!! Also, we unpacked all our boxes and the very expensive glass lamps are missing. I have called the company numerous times, they never pick up their phone. If they do, they tell me they can't hellp me, and I have to speak to a manager who are also never there (Rob is never there, his manager Mike Silva is in Hawaii) and I left a message for another manager Mark who never returns my calls. This company is a total scam.
