I moved from Ft. Lauderdale, FL to San Diego, CA in October of 2006. Certainly, I was aware of the low bar for many moving companies and the image of the industry being similar to that of the used car market, so I tried to do a good amount of research online and over the phone. With help of the Better Business Bureau, one can find out the number of complaints against their member moving businesses. Most all of them had some complaints, but it proved nearly impossible to find out specific information on the complaints. So, in the end, I settled for a moving company that seemed to have few complaints and had one of the most competitive price quotes. Here I made a mistake. It is easy for a moving company to low ball a price quote to get the business, as what they are giving you is an "estimate." Even if the estimate is accurate, going with the cheapest one is NOT the way to go. Please pay more and select them based on service. Anyway, let me tell you about Infinity Van Lines. When they showed up with their moving truck they right away started dragging and tossing my belongings into the truck. When I asked one of the guys why he was being so rough, he said that he shouldn't even be working today as he was just released from jail and had some matters to settle at the courthouse...nice. With unease I watched the truck driving away, imagining what my belongings would have to go through when I would not be around...My fear ended up being justified. The movers showed up in San Diego, in an unmarked truck, despite the fact that Infinity Van Lines had claimed they would use their own branded truck. It turns out, the guys that made the drop off were sub-contractors, even though Infinity had stated they did not outsource their moves. We live on the 3rd floor of a condo complex. The movers loaded the belongings onto the sidewalk rather than into the gated area, before taking them upstairs. I ended up having to police the sidewalk, as they were unwilling to adjust their unloading strategy. To make a long story a little shorter, when all was said and done, over 50% of the furniture was damaged and our large screen TV was "missing." Additionally, many items contracted water damage. I can best describe the condition of our valuables as “vandalized.” Most of the damaged was beyond repair, rendering the items valueless. From October through January, I tried unsuccessfully to speak with the owner to resolve the matter. I never got beyond the receptionist. I ended up going to Small Claims court. Infinity Van Lines tried to move the venue to Florida, but was unsuccessful. On May 25th, the case was finally decided in San Diego. The judge ruled in my favor citing fraud. Infinity never showed up for the case, by the way, and til this day has not spoken to me about the move. A word of advice: please be extremely diligent in selecting a moving company, ask for referrals, if at all possible drive yourself and have the movers just load and unload the truck and whatever you do, do not hire Infinity Van Lines.
