I'm reiterating the TERRIBLE service provided by Northern Van Lines. See my post of 06/2012. To briefly recap, Northern Van Lines charged my son $1600 (plus $900+ at delivery) to move his possessions a little over 9 miles where it sat in storage for a month (unknown to us). I'm sure he would have been charged more at delivery due to NVL (or their so called professional drivers) deceptive charges. We were able to retrieve my son's property from the storage facility. The movers packed one box in which they put a vacuum cleaner, a coffee table and the legs to said table, and a baseball bat. Nothing was cushioned, and to boot the box was in the storage unit upside down. The coffee table had a hole in it and the vacuum cleaner was broken. A reputable moving company is picking up my son's things on 07/18/12; delivery in Michigan will be between July 29-August 1. Started getting quotes only one week ago. All agents from the various companies appeared in person to give a quote, unlike Northern Van Lines. All gave a binding quote since the load is relatively small. (If weight is higher than estimated, we owe no additional money; if quote is lower, we will pay less. Although the minimum is 2500 lbs, so if we're under we will still pay for 2500 lbs.) Northern Van Lines' estimate was 3000 lbs and when the driver came to pick up, said it was even more and charged more $$$ up front. With the reputable moving company, we owe nothing until delivery! Plus, we were provided with free boxes (used) and packing material. In addition, we have called the agent several times and he actually answers his telephone!! We learned from the reputable moving companies that this is peak moving season and what so called moving companies like Northern Van Lines do is take your money and then post on the internet what moves they have and how much they are willing to pay a contract driver to take it. Obviously the amount of money NVL is willing to pay a driver is low balled so NVL gets more $$$. Since it's peak season, "real" drivers can be picky about what loads to take. I was told by several of the agents that I was lucky to get my son's possessions back and had I not, his things would have sat in storage until at least September or longer. Notice how the positive 5 star ratings have first and last names? Who does that? Nobody, or in the case of Northern Van Lines, employees making up things to ensure there are positive comments and boost their star rating. Also notice that after a negative review, there are several positive 5 star ratings every day. That is so the negative ratings keep moving down. I'm sure after this post there will be several more positive ratings. Do not contract with this company. You will be sorry.
