I understand why cross country movers have a bad rep

This happened almost a year ago but I'm still so upset. I never recovered any of my items, the company did not follow through on their insurance policy, and I still discover additional missing items to this day. Lesson: do your homework before you hire. Here is the complaint I submitted to the BBB. (This is a summary - in reality, the experience was so much worse.) Problems regarding move from NY to CA include: Movers (INCLUDING OWNER) came 1 day LATE(7/22) WITHOUT PRIOR NOTICE. They finished packing only 10min before I had to leave for my internat'l flight (which they knew about). Also came WITHOUT BLANKETS/PROTECTIVE MATERIALS (which I noted on the contract) and without WARDROBE BOXES promised (I haphazardly had to pack those items, many of which are now MISSING). They did not prepare an INVENTORY LIST!! Because Reliance came late without warning, I had NO TIME to hire alternate movers. Owner also PROMISED 8/8 DELIVERY date, which was why I had originally hired them. When I called to check on progress, owner was out of country and apparently DID NOT PROVIDE DELIVERY ADDRESS to his employees before he left. When I arrived in CA 8/7, I had several voice messages from Reliance tractor driver and 3rd party movers that they planned to deliver end of July - clearly owner DID NOT TELL THEM DELIVERY DATE nor conveyed the message that I was out of the country and only reachable through email (which I also noted on the contract). When I called 3rd party movers, they ALSO DID NOT HAVE THE DELIVERY ADDRESS and COULD NOT DELIVER until following week when I would be back at work and unavailable to receive. I slept on the floor of empty apt and made 50+ phone calls to get items delivered. During whole process, Reliance owner DID NOTHING TO HELP - DID NOT RETURN SINGLE EMAIL/PHONE CALL and other (rude) employees would not help (they assured me owner would take care of it). There was also DAMAGE to furniture and I am MISSING OVER $1,000 WORTH of items including LAPTOP, expensive shoes, belts etc. I emailed and left msgs for owner 2 weeks ago as I was instructed to by employees and he has not returned any of my msgs regarding these items. I would categorize Reliance service as committing GROSS NEGLIGENCE. I would really like to have missing items recovered, esp as laptop contains personal information. It has been a very stressful month dealing with this company and I would sincerely appreciate your help. Thank you.
