Moving & Storage with Slater Transfer: St. George, UT and Las Vegas

We hired Slater (affiliated with Allied) to move our household from St. George, UT (2,500+ sf plus one full garage of items) into storage for a month and a half until we could move into our new house in California. We did our own packing (get boxes from U-Line). The team that came to pack the truck was from Slater's Las Vegas office and was excellent, well beyond our expectations. They took extra good care of our things, super shrink-wrapped every chair and sofa we had, and asked us what furniture items were fragile and needed special handling. They didn't waste a minute and hustled the entire time, finishing in about 6 hours. Afterwards, they drove the truck to Slater's St. George, UT facility for long-term storage. Here's where it gets crazy: Slater's policy is to unload the truck at their facility, unwrap everything (out of moving blankets and shrink wrap, which the packing team wrapped really well), re-pack it, re-inventory, and then put things in storage. Then, when the items were ready to move to California, they took them out of storage, unwrapped and re-wrapped AGAIN, re-inventoried, packed the truck, and drove it to CA. We watched the movers in St. George and in California like hawks - both teams were extremely careful and no damage occured. However, a number of furniture items were damaged and we are convinced it happened somewhere in the convoluted storage-in, storage-out process. I don't know why Slater insists on wrapping and unwrapping items and re-inventorying several times, but it was obvious some of our furniture and floor lamps were handled very roughly (one lamp has a solid cast iron base and the base cracked!). We were also completely unhappy with the car mover Slater recommended (NexDay Auto Transport) - they totally messed up the delivery date and DROVE the car the last 25 miles to get to its final destination. Unbelievable. No apologies for the delivery date screw up, no compensation for having someone drive our car so far without permission to do so. In fact, when I called their "manager" to deal with the delivery date issue, I got a very grumpy response about how inconvenient this situation was for him. For all that, they were pricey, as well. Otherwise, our sales rep from Slater was great, very communicative, responsive, helpful. When he first came over to give us an estimate, he provided a really accurate quote right on the spot.
