I used Spirit Van Lines to move a 2 bedroom apartment worth of items from Philadelphia to San Francisco. The initial estimate I was quoted for this move was ~$2500, based on a detailed inventory list I provided. On the day of the move, I had a few additional boxes but the additional cost should have amounted to maybe $200 if I'm being generous with the math. However, I was charged over $4000 because supposedly, the cost was based on the cubic footage used in the van at the time of loading and this was WAY different from the estimated footage. Clearly some very poor/suspect estimation techniques are being used for the quote if the cubic footage was wrong by almost 2x and this can barely be attributed to variance from the original inventory list. Supposedly the initial quote didn't account for the fact that not 100% of space in the van can be filled, but this is always the case and customers must continually be charged extra on the day of the move as a result. Finally, when my boxes did arrive in San Francisco, they looked as though they'd been through war - many were ripped open and severely damaged. I've moved 4 times in the last 8 years and have never seen movers treat property this badly. They also lost some items. I was scammed here. They loured me in with a low initial quote and then because they had my stuff, I was forced to pay the ridiculously inflated amount (and yes, they asked for a cash/money order upon re-delivery). I have been telling everyone I know not to use this moving company.
