We interviewed several companies for our relocation to IL from Michigan. We-haul moving company gave us the lowest total estimate at 1600$. The next closest competitor was 1900$ We discussed with them at the time what would happen if the estimate was incorrect. They said that they always overestimate and that never happens, but if it did there would be a per lb surcharge. We agreed with the stipulation that if the final load would estimate over 1900$ we would be using another company. The estimator said that would be fine. The movers arrived and packed the boxes and began the trip to IL. We closed on our house and the next occupants were to move in the next day. Halfway to IL my we received a phone call stating that there had been a grave error in estimation and that we now owed 4600$ instead of 1600$. They said that they could not return the items nor would they deliver without the extra 3000$. I made several frantic calls to the offices and supervisors and eventually got them down to 3400$ (over twice the estimate) after many hours of negotiations and frustrations. This was only after the threat of lawsuits for criminal extortion and contract breach. They stated very matter of fact that they know "people like us" and deal with us all the time. My wife and I are both physicians and only wish to engage in fair business practice. We have no problem paying for services if we know the cost upfront and can make a legitimate business decision. However, waiting until we have no choice in the matter to extort money from us is disturbing. In addition, we have since found that several items were missing from our packing list including electronic devices retailed in excess of 400$ a piece. My wife personally saw these loaded, but are no longer in our possession.
